SpaceX Nvidia GPUs exclusively is now the reported direction for the company’s AI computing plans. Elon Musk wrote on August 4 that SpaceX had committed to exclusive use of Nvidia GPUs because they were the best, according to Wccftech and The Register. The statement points to a single-vendor preference for an ambitious compute buildout that has been discussed for data centers on Earth and proposed satellites, although it does not establish an operating Nvidia-only system in orbit.

Musk’s post is a reported exclusive-use pledge, not evidence of a market monopoly or a completed procurement program. Its organizational and program scope is unspecified. The reports reviewed do not specify financial terms, duration, contractual status or scope.

That distinction matters. Nvidia may be the intended supplier for the AI efforts described in the reports, but the available accounts do not show whether the pledge applies across every SpaceX operation, a particular AI program, or a defined period. Neither report establishes deployed capacity.

What would SpaceX use Nvidia GPUs for?

Wccftech reported that Musk linked Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform to SpaceX AI workloads in terrestrial data centers and in space. It also reported expectations for 2 gigawatts of compute capacity by the end of 2026 and 10 gigawatts by the end of 2027. Those are reported targets, rather than installed capacity, and no spending figure was disclosed in the reports.

The Register separately reported that SpaceX said it was working with Nvidia on the Starmind AI1 satellite compute payload. Each proposed Starmind satellite would use Nvidia Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs, according to that report. SpaceX’s website, as described by The Register, says a fully deployed AI1 would stand 30 meters tall, span 75 meters across its solar arrays and support a 250-kilowatt compute payload.

These are planned orbital deployments, not evidence that an AI data center is already operating in space. The Register also reported that Musk said SpaceX properties could use the satellite architecture in terrestrial data centers without the satellite’s solar and thermal-management systems.

For operators, the proposal places terrestrial and orbital workloads under a common hardware direction, at least in Musk’s public description. Cloud infrastructure normally combines compute with the underlying systems used to deliver it; SpaceX’s proposal would put some of that compute in a satellite payload rather than a conventional data center.

The decision also follows earlier evidence of Musk’s influence over Nvidia allocation. CNBC reported in 2024 that internal Nvidia emails showed Musk directing GPUs intended for Tesla to X and xAI. That episode involved prioritization among Musk-linked companies, while the new statement concerns SpaceX’s reported future GPU preference.

The result is a notable customer commitment for Nvidia if SpaceX follows through, especially as the company considers orbital compute. It is too early, based on the available reporting, to call it a Nvidia monopoly in space or to treat the planned capacity as operational.
