Tau Robotics cleaning robot waitlist opens at $30 an hour in San Francisco
Tau Robotics opened an invite-only San Francisco waitlist, but its $30-an-hour robot cleaners are still guided by human operators.

Tau Robotics has opened a waitlist for its invite-only Tau Robotics cleaning robot service in San Francisco, priced at $30 an hour. The launch is a useful signal for the home robotics sector: the product is being sold as robotic labor, but Tau says people are still involved in controlling every cleaning visit.
Alexander Koch, Tau Robotics’ co-founder and CEO, announced the waitlist on X on Tuesday. No funding, revenue or headcount figures were disclosed. Koch said several hundred people have already signed up, and each cleaning visit is currently limited to one hour.
Tau’s website shows a small humanoid robot doing household work, including taking a bag from a vehicle, wiping the inside of a refrigerator, vacuuming, cleaning surfaces and emptying trash cans with claw-like hands. The site presents three San Francisco cleaning robots: Chelsea, for kitchens and bathrooms; Elon, which Tau says can learn where items belong after repeat visits; and Tony, positioned for deep cleaning.
Koch said on X that the videos were not sped up to make the robot appear more natural. He told The Register that Tau built the robot’s cameras, claws and onboard compute system, while the rest of the hardware comes from Chinese robot maker Unitree. The Register noted that this hardware dependence could matter because the Trump administration has banned imports of foreign robots.
How does Tau Robotics' robot cleaning service work?
Tau’s robots are not operating as fully autonomous cleaners. Koch said the machines are controlled by both an AI system and a human operator, with the AI handling motor control while the human directs the system either directly or through higher-level commands depending on the task.
Koch described the setup to The Register as conceptually similar to the path taken by autonomous driving: humans control the system now, later shift toward safety oversight, and eventually may be removed if the software improves enough. Tau has not disclosed benchmarks showing how much work the AI can perform without human input.
Tau’s privacy policy gives a more operational view of the service. It says every robot is controlled in real time by a human operator during visits, even as Tau describes the control model as shared between AI and a person. Some operators are Tau employees and others come through a staffing agency, according to the company, but Tau says all currently work from its facility and have passed background checks and training.
Koch also said Tau plans to allow remote supervision from other locations in the future. That would broaden the operating model, but it also raises the practical privacy question that sits under any home teleoperation service: a person is watching a live feed from inside the customer’s home while the robot works.
Tau’s policy says the robots record video that may be used to train its AI cleaning models, which the company says it hopes will eventually allow the system to clean without a human operator. Those recordings can include full video of people in the home and are stored indefinitely unless customers ask Tau to delete them.
The company says it does not sell the recordings or use them for advertising sharing. Access is still broad inside the service chain: operators, support workers, engineers and third-party service providers may view the footage, according to Tau’s policy.
For robotics founders and investors, Tau’s launch sits in the gap between a consumer service and a data-gathering operation for autonomy. The commercial pitch is inexpensive cleaning labor. The product reality, as described by Tau, is a teleoperated robot workforce gathering household video while the company tries to make the AI less dependent on people.
