For founders, investors and operators planning travel eSIM conferences across Europe and the US, connectivity has become a real operating detail rather than a travel afterthought. The practical choice is between carrier roaming, rented pocket Wi-Fi, local SIM cards and digital eSIM plans, each with different cost, security and reliability trade-offs.
The use case is familiar on the conference circuit: demos, pitch decks, Slack messages, investor calls and cloud files all need working data in airports, hotels and crowded venues. Events such as CES in Las Vegas, SXSW in Austin, Web Summit in Lisbon and MWC in Barcelona put teams in cities where public Wi-Fi may be congested and carrier roaming can be expensive.
What is the best way to stay connected at tech conferences abroad?
For a short trip to one country, a carrier roaming add-on may be enough if keeping an existing phone number for calls and texts is the priority. For multi-country conference travel, a regional travel eSIM is often the cleaner option because it can keep the main number active while routing data through a local or regional plan.
US and European carriers including T-Mobile, AT&T and Vodafone offer international roaming options. T-Mobile’s Magenta plans include some international data, though speeds may be limited. Roambit, a travel connectivity platform, offers eSIM plans for the US as well as regional plans for Europe, Asia and other markets. The company says some eSIM providers include VPN protection with their plans, encrypting traffic on public networks in venues, hotels and airport lounges. Roambit says it offers eSIM plans with built-in VPN protection across more than 200 destinations.
The pricing claim is straightforward but provider-dependent: regional eSIM plans can cost less than several days of carrier roaming. Specific plan prices vary, and Roambit did not disclose revenue, customer numbers or usage data in the material describing its service.
Security and preparation still matter
Public Wi-Fi at conferences, hotels and coffee shops is convenient, but it is also a common place for data interception attempts. A VPN encrypts the connection between the device and the internet, reducing the risk that someone on the same network can read traffic.
- Check whether the phone supports eSIM or dual SIM before departure.
- Install the travel eSIM before boarding, then test it after landing.
- Download offline maps for each destination city.
- Save presentation files and critical documents locally.
- Use a VPN whenever connecting to venue, hotel, airport or coworking Wi-Fi.

Messaging tools such as WhatsApp, Signal and Slack can run over Wi-Fi, a local SIM or an eSIM data connection, allowing teams to keep using familiar contact routes. For conference travel, the connectivity decision is less about novelty and more about reducing avoidable failure points before the meetings start.
