Axle has raised a $17.5 million Series A led by Base10 Partners, funding the company’s effort to automate insurance verification, monitoring and policy updates for businesses. The Axle $17.5M Series A, announced Aug. 11, will support engineering and go-to-market hiring, expansion beyond five established markets and deeper relationships with insurance carriers, according to the company.

Y Combinator and Gradient returned for the round. Stage 2 Capital and industry angels, including founders of Cover Genius, also participated. Neither Axle nor the reports reviewed gave a valuation or other financing terms.

The round is a substantial step up from Axle’s previous financing. Finovate reported that Gradient led a $4 million seed round for the company, which brought its total funding at that point to $4.5 million. The new Series A is about 3.9 times that earlier reported total.

What does Axle’s insurance API do?

Axle is not an insurer or underwriting business. It describes itself as a data and workflow layer between insurance carriers and companies that need current policy information, including lenders, rental-car businesses, auto dealers and employers.

Its system connects to fragmented carrier systems, directs a query to the relevant source and turns policy data, including information held in unstructured documents, into a standard format accessible through one API. Axle says its software and AI agents can then automate checks such as whether a customer has insurance, whether that coverage meets a business’s requirements, whether a policy can be updated and whether coverage has changed.

The stated rationale is to reduce the phone calls, faxes and manual document review still used in some insurance operations. In its paid announcement, Axle said a mortgage lender may interact with insurance more than 10 times a year for one loan, while a large carrier can run 15 or more policy systems. Those are company-provided descriptions of the problem, rather than independently verified measures of industry practice.

Axle cited SIXT as an example of a customer using the product to verify renters’ insurance at the rental counter. Jordan Bannantine, SIXT’s head of risk management, said in Axle’s announcement that the service provides an immediate coverage answer and has helped the rental company recover millions of dollars in losses previously written off.

What will Axle do with the new funding?

Axle says it intends to take its clearinghouse into more than 50 segments across home, auto, renters, commercial and specialty insurance. It also plans to add engineering and commercial staff and develop more direct carrier relationships.

The company says it currently clears more than $100 billion in insurance coverage a year for more than 4,000 businesses, including Rocket Mortgage, Avis, Experian and Sonic Automotive. It also says it tripled the number of automated workflows in the past six months, made workflows 20 times faster and helped customers recover more than $220 million in losses. Those operating and performance figures are Axle’s claims and have not been independently verified.

Founded in 2022 by Cameron Duncan, Armaan Sikand and Nihar Parikh, Axle is positioning its product as shared connectivity and standardized policy data for businesses that need insurance checks embedded in their own systems. The Series A gives it capital to test that positioning across additional insurance lines, where carrier integrations and usable policy data will determine whether the model can extend beyond its current markets.
