OpenAI offers ChatGPT Academic Researchers program to 100,000 scientists
OpenAI will give 100,000 academic researchers free access to advanced ChatGPT features under a $250 million science initiative.

OpenAI Group PBC launched a ChatGPT Academic Researchers program that will give 100,000 scientists free access to more capable versions of ChatGPT, positioning the offer as part of a $250 million push to support scientific work. The company said the program starts with 10,000 researchers at a limited set of universities, with another 90,000 to be added over time.
Researchers can apply through a form on OpenAI’s website. OpenAI did not disclose the full university list, the program’s duration, or whether participants will face limits beyond the higher usage caps it described.
What is the ChatGPT Academic Researchers program?
The program is a free access tier for academic scientists that includes higher ChatGPT usage limits, larger context windows and an expanded version of OpenAI’s deep research feature, according to the company. Deep research, introduced in February, can pull information from hundreds of websites to answer questions, and OpenAI said researchers can also set it to use particular sources such as scientific journals.
An invited scientist can bring in four colleagues from the same academic institution, OpenAI said. Those colleagues receive the same feature set at no charge.
OpenAI said the research offering includes its newest large language models, including the GPT-5.6 Sol flagship model. Participants will also get GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, a version OpenAI describes as tuned for complex prompts and long-running work.
The bundle also includes Codex and ChatGPT Work. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Work as a productivity tool for carrying out multi-step tasks, such as summarizing customer support requests, turning the findings into a chart and placing that chart into a slide. The company did not provide adoption data for ChatGPT Work or disclose how much compute capacity it is allocating to the academic program.
OpenAI is using research access to widen its campus footprint
The academic program sits inside a broader $250 million OpenAI initiative aimed at scientific projects. In May, OpenAI made $50 million in AI resources available to a group of universities. This month, the company also said it would support multiple research projects connected to the U.S. Department of Energy.
OpenAI’s higher education push began in 2024 with ChatGPT Edu, a campus plan that includes administrative tools such as cybersecurity controls and usage analytics. The new research program is different in structure: it is aimed directly at scientists and offers free access rather than a standard paid institutional plan.
OpenAI said it will provide training on using ChatGPT for complex research work. Its employees will also help scientists connect the service with other scientific software. The company did not specify how many employees will support those integrations or how participating researchers’ data will be handled beyond the program details it announced.
For OpenAI, the move puts advanced ChatGPT features in front of a large pool of technical users who influence software choices inside universities and labs. If researchers adopt the tools, OpenAI could benefit later through paid ChatGPT subscriptions or API use, though the company has not tied the program to a specific revenue target.
