Anthropic custom chip plan puts Claude team into silicon design
Anthropic has confirmed it is hiring a team to co-design chips and Claude models, while leaving manufacturing and timing undisclosed.

Anthropic has confirmed an Anthropic custom chip initiative, saying it is creating an internal team to design silicon for its Claude models. The company is hiring engineers across hardware and software to co-design chips and models, a step aimed at making Claude faster and more efficient at the scale customers require, according to Reuters.
The announcement turns an earlier possibility into a defined hiring effort. Reuters reported in April that Anthropic was weighing the design of its own AI chips. On Aug. 5, Business Insider reported Anthropic's first public confirmation through a company spokesperson, who described an in-house silicon team for Claude.
Anthropic did not announce a processor, disclose technical specifications or publish a release schedule. It also did not say whether it will manufacture the chips itself, where they would be made, or how much the effort will cost.
What is Anthropic's custom chip plan?
The stated plan is hardware-model co-design: Anthropic wants chip engineers and model teams to build the processor and Claude together rather than adapting Claude solely to available hardware. Anthropic says that approach should improve speed and efficiency for customer-scale use. The company is recruiting engineers with experience across chip design and verification, according to Business Insider.
Co-design does not mean Anthropic is abandoning its current suppliers. The company called custom silicon the latest element of a multi-chip strategy and said its hardware stack will continue to include technology from Amazon Web Services, Google, Nvidia and AMD, Reuters reported. That makes the chip effort an addition to, rather than a stated replacement for, its existing infrastructure sources.
When will Anthropic's custom chip be available?
Anthropic has provided no timeline. It has not said when a chip could be ready for testing or deployment, whether an outside foundry would produce it, or which Claude workloads it would target. Prior reporting that Anthropic had discussed a possible manufacturing relationship with Samsung Electronics remains unconfirmed by Anthropic and does not establish an agreement.
The hiring effort comes amid a shortage of chips needed to run and develop increasingly advanced AI systems, Reuters reported. Designing advanced AI silicon can cost roughly $500 million, Reuters said, citing industry sources. That estimate is not an Anthropic budget or commitment.
Anthropic joins a group of AI companies pursuing more specialized hardware, but the company has so far disclosed only its team-building and co-design goals. The practical questions, including fabrication, deployment date, performance and economics, remain unanswered.
