The FCC Chinese robot ban took effect July 28, blocking imports of new foreign “advanced robotic devices” and internet-connected Chinese power inverters under a national security action by the Trump administration, Reuters reported via Nikkei. The rule matters for robotics vendors, warehouse automation buyers, clean-energy suppliers and data center operators because it reaches far beyond humanoids and robot dogs, and no dollar impact or company revenue exposure was disclosed.

The Federal Communications Commission said the measure is meant to protect the U.S. AI buildout from disruption, data theft and cyberattacks, while also supporting domestic manufacturing. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the agency would continue working to secure U.S. critical supply chains, according to the report.

What does the FCC Chinese robot ban cover?

The rule applies to unreleased models, not devices already on the market, according to The Verge. Its definition covers many ground-based robots that are software controlled, weigh more than 2 kilograms including a docking station, can sense their environment and have wireless connectivity.

That means the policy is not limited to humanoid machines or quadrupeds. FCC spokesperson Katie Gorscak confirmed to The Verge that robot vacuums are included, along with robotic lawn mowers, sidewalk delivery robots and transport robots used in Amazon warehouses. Exemptions include self-driving cars, trains, drones, underwater vehicles, surgical robots, wheelchairs and fixed robotic arms.

The scope puts consumer and industrial robotics supply chains under pressure because much of the category is made in China. The Verge reported that major robot vacuum brands such as Roborock, Ecovacs, Dreame, Xiaomi and Narwal are Chinese, and that Roomba is now owned by the Chinese company Picea. IDC analyst Jitesh Ubrani told The Verge that there are few non-Chinese brands in the category and that their share is small enough to be hard to track.

Why is the FCC treating robots as a security risk?

The FCC’s National Security Determination gives two main reasons: supply chain dependence and cyber risk. The document says key components for advanced robots, including actuators, grippers, batteries and sensors, are increasingly concentrated in a small number of countries, some of which it says have shown a willingness to disrupt U.S. supply chains during geopolitical tensions.

The cybersecurity case centers on networked robots with cameras, microphones, LiDAR, thermal sensors and other data-gathering systems. The FCC determination says those systems could be used for data extraction, surveillance, remote control or insecure software updates if exploited by a hostile actor.

The document cites several incidents. It says a vulnerability found in early 2026 allowed remote access to thousands of foreign robots in homes worldwide, including camera feeds, audio and floor plans. It also describes a flaw in some humanoid robots that could have allowed remote takeover and scanning for nearby robots, creating the possibility of a self-spreading “humanoid botnet.” Security researchers in April 2025 also found what appeared to be a pre-installed backdoor in Chinese robot dogs, according to the determination.

Why are power inverters included?

The FCC is also blocking new internet-connected inverters from China. These devices convert direct current to alternating current and connect solar, batteries and data centers to the electric grid, making them more relevant as AI infrastructure drives demand for power.

Because connected inverters can be controlled remotely, U.S. officials see them as a potential sabotage point. The report notes that China is the largest manufacturer in the category, with Sungrow and Huawei among the leading suppliers, and that authorities want to avoid a repeat of the Volt Typhoon campaign uncovered in 2023, in which attackers used compromised routers to mask operations targeting U.S. critical infrastructure.

On the robotics side, Unitree is among the companies most exposed. Counterpoint Research says Unitree has about one-fifth of global humanoid robot sales, according to the report. The company was recently added to the Pentagon’s list of alleged Chinese military-linked companies and has partnered with Nvidia. Unitree has said its robot data remains in the U.S.
