Backflip AI scan-to-CAD tool converts meshes into editable CAD models
Backflip AI has launched a scan-to-CAD copilot for Fusion and the web, but its speed and cost claims lack independent validation.

Backflip AI has launched a scan-to-CAD copilot that it says converts 3D scans, STL files and other mesh data into editable parametric models. The Backflip AI scan-to-CAD product is available as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and a standalone web app, targeting a reverse-engineering task that can consume hours of specialist CAD work.
The distinction Backflip is selling is not just scan cleanup. A 3D scan typically produces a mesh, a dense representation of an object’s surface. Backflip says its model instead reconstructs CAD-style operations, including extrudes, revolves, patterns, chamfers and fillets, producing a feature tree that an engineer can change after generation. That would make the output more useful for revising a replacement part than a static surface model.
How does Backflip AI scan-to-CAD work?
A user supplies a scan or mesh file, and the software attempts to infer the sequence of modelling operations used to make the part. Backflip offers a fast mode for typical geometries and a thinking mode that gives the system more time on complex parts in an effort to improve dimensional accuracy, according to VoxelMatters. The web app exports STEP files for use in other CAD packages; Backflip lists Onshape and other plug-ins as forthcoming, rather than currently available.
Backflip says scan reconstruction that takes hours by hand can be handled in seconds. Launch coverage describes the fast mode as taking a couple of minutes for typical geometries. Those are vendor performance claims, not independently tested benchmarks, and the company has not disclosed error rates, tolerance results, supported-geometry limits or comparisons against manual reconstruction.
That gap matters for the maintenance and manufacturing use cases the company is pursuing. A CAD file for a legacy fixture or an unavailable component may shorten a reverse-engineering queue, but a generated model still needs engineering review before it is used for a high-tolerance or production application. What Backflip has disclosed on access and pricing
Available now: Autodesk Fusion add-in and a browser-based web application.

Price: paid plans start at $20 a month, according to The Decoder and VoxelMatters.
Free use: the reported allowance is inconsistent. VoxelMatters says the launch press release listed three reconstructions, while a separate post from CEO Greg Mark listed four. The Decoder also reported four.
Backflip has also claimed that it can reduce the cost of digitizing one physical part from roughly $1,500 to about $10, and that an automotive manufacturer is using an automated scanning system to digitize about half of the parts it processes. Neither claim is independently substantiated in the available reporting. The company, founded in late 2024 by former Markforged leaders Greg Mark and David Benhaim, has reported $30 million in funding.
The commercial question is whether Backflip can reliably turn scanned geometry into CAD histories that survive real design changes, rather than merely make visually plausible files. The launch provides no independent evidence yet on that test.
