Anthropic said Aug. 7 it has updated its Fable 5 biology safeguards, claiming the change reduced biology-related fallbacks by about 85% in testing across its products. The revision expands access to routine health and education uses, but the company is still routing work in virology, toxicology and molecular design to its less biologically capable Opus 5 model.

The distinction matters for users evaluating Fable 5 for scientific work. Anthropic says the model is still unavailable for professional biology research and drug development, despite the narrower screening system. It did not give a date for the trusted-access programs it says it is building for frontier biology capabilities.

The company refined the automated classifiers that decide whether a biology request should be safeguarded. When a classifier triggers, Fable 5 does not answer the request. Instead, it reroutes it to Opus 5, which Anthropic describes as a capable model without Fable 5's level of biological capability.

Anthropic says the retrained system should create fewer interruptions for everyday health questions, biology education, lab-result interpretation and questions about symptoms. It also says healthcare professionals can get more support for clinical tasks. The company cautioned that some material it considers likely benign can still be caught by a precautionary safety margin.

The reported 85% figure is Anthropic's own testing result, rather than an independently reported measure of model accuracy or scientific usefulness.

Which biology requests still fall back to Opus 5?

Anthropic continues to classify virology, toxicology and molecular design as dual-use topics, meaning work that can have legitimate scientific applications as well as harmful ones. Requests in those categories continue to go to Opus 5. The company says that boundary is why Fable 5 cannot yet serve professional biology research or drug-development workflows.

Anthropic initially launched Fable 5 with almost all biology queries blocked and rerouted, a deliberately broad approach it expected would produce substantial false positives. The company said it chose that approach while making the model available for non-biology work because it believed misuse of frontier biology capabilities could have severe consequences.

How Anthropic changed the screening system

According to Anthropic, it rewrote the classifier's governing rules over several weeks, sought internal and external expert feedback, created new training data and retrained the system. The stated goal was to better separate ordinary requests from harmful or dual-use research while retaining resistance to jailbreak attempts.

Anthropic also says its internal capability assessments found Fable 5 could offer a malicious actor seeking to develop a biological weapon meaningful assistance unavailable elsewhere. That is the company's assessment, not an independently established result in the material available. The Wall Street Journal reported in June that Fable 5's earlier broad restrictions had drawn backlash from some developers and users.

The update therefore changes routing precision, not the basic policy. Fable 5 should be more useful for lower-risk biology questions, while the company keeps its most sensitive biology capabilities behind an access model it has yet to detail.
