Alibaba previews Qwen 3.8 as open-weight AI race intensifies in China

Alibaba has introduced Qwen 3.8, a 2.4 trillion-parameter AI model that the company says will be released with open weights soon, with preview access priced at 10 percent of its standard rate. The launch matters because Alibaba is positioning Qwen 3.8 against other high-profile Chinese models, including Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, at a point when access terms and distribution are becoming as important as benchmark claims.

The Qwen team said the model is available now through Alibaba’s Token Plan, Qoder and QoderWork. Alibaba did not give a date for the release of the weights, saying only that they are coming “soon.” It also did not publish benchmark results, which leaves its performance claims unverified for now.

Alibaba says Qwen 3.8 should improve on Qwen 3.7-Max, particularly in software development and more complex productivity work. The company listed full-stack development, data analysis and office workflows as target use cases. Qwen developer Shuai Bai said the model is also the team’s first multimodal system above 1 trillion parameters, with support for images, video and documents.

The company’s positioning is explicit. The Qwen team has said the model matches frontier systems and is second only to Fable 5. Without disclosed benchmarks, pricing beyond the preview discount, or weight-release timing, those claims are marketing until outside users can test the model under comparable conditions.

Kimi K3 pressure

Qwen 3.8 arrives as Moonshot AI is trying to convert attention around Kimi K3 into product usage. Moonshot has also promised open weights, but current access runs through its chat app and API. That gives the company a way to capture developers and users before a broader open-weight release.

Alibaba’s faster move toward open-weight distribution could pressure that approach if the company follows through quickly. Open weights can make a model more attractive to developers and companies that want more control over deployment, customization and infrastructure costs, although Alibaba has not yet said what license or restrictions will apply to Qwen 3.8.

Moonshot’s commercial timing adds weight to the release. Bloomberg reported that Moonshot reached $300 million in annual recurring revenue in June and is planning to go public in as little as six months. That makes Kimi K3 more than a technical comparison point for Alibaba. It is a competing distribution strategy tied to a company preparing for public-market scrutiny.

For now, Alibaba has disclosed the model’s parameter count, preview channels, preview discount and intended workload focus. It has not disclosed benchmark data, an exact open-weight release date, licensing terms or production pricing. Those omissions will determine whether Qwen 3.8 becomes a meaningful open-weight alternative or a limited preview wrapped in frontier-model positioning.
